Weihenstephaner Brewery
Weihenstephaner Kellerbier is brewed by Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan (Bavarian State Brewery of Weihenstephan), a German brewery owned by the Free State of Bavaria located on the site of the former monastery Weihenstephan Abbey in Freising, Bavaria. The brewery claims to be the oldest brewery in the world, but this has not been verified by other sources. There are a variety of documents that date the brewery possibly going back to 1040. The brewery brews a variety of beers and features several wheat beers and many more.
Weihenstephaner Kellerbier
Weihenstephaner describes 1516 Kellerbier as “a specialty beer brewed with the rare hop variety Hallertauer Record, a variety now only grown by a single hop farmer in the Hallertau hop cultivation region…1516 Kellerbier is full-bodied with a pleasant caramel note and a rich amber color. During the extended maturation period, the bottom-fermenting yeast sediments at the bottom of the tank, leaving the beer with a slightly opalescent cloudiness, part of its characteristic appearance. The balanced hop note rounds out the flavor perfectly…often served with grilled foods, roasts and cheeses.”
Weihenstephaner Kellerbier has a 5.6% ABV, 25 IBU and 142 calories (11.2 oz. bottle). There is no information about carbs, fat and protein. It has an “Outstanding” rating on Beer Advocate.
Our Review of Weihenstephaner Kellerbier
I have had two beers from Weihenstephaner, their Vitus strong wheat beer and their Original Premium lager. Both were exceptional, but the Vitus has a 7.7% ABV and is a bit too heavy to just “have a beer.” I liked the Original Premium Lager so much that I went back to Total Wine & More to buy a 6 or 12 pack, but all they had were singles. So I decided to try their Kellerbier.
It was even better. Like Original Premium, this is one of the best beers I have ever had. It was everything that Original Premium is but with more flavor. I like “beer that tastes like beer” and Kellerbier tastes exactly like that – smooth, crisp, clean, refreshing and no aftertaste. It is perfect to drink anytime, anywhere, inside or outside, with or without food. I recommend it highly.
For other excellent German beer recommendations, try Weihenstephaner Original Premium, Ayinger OktoberFest, Warsteiner German Pilsener, Franziskaner Weissbier and Weihenstephaner Vitus.
