Spaten Brewery
Spaten Premium Lager Beer is brewed by Spaten Munchen, a famous German brewery that dates back to 1397. The brewery merged with the Franzikaner Brewery in 1922, as both breweries had the same owner. In 1997 the brewery combined with Lowenbrau to form Spaten-Löwenbräu-Gruppe. The brewery brews a variety of beers including Lager, Oktoberfest and Non Alcoholic.
Spaten Premium Lager
Spaten Munchen introduced Spaten Muncher Hell in 1894 in Germany. The same beer is sold in the United States as Premium Lager. According to Spaten “On March 21, 1894, at a time when people in Munich and nationwide only enjoyed dark, sweet-malty beer, Spaten brewed the first Munich Hell as a pioneer of the category…light lager. Golden in color with a well-balanced hop-flavor. The full rounded body is a superb balance between hops and a malty sweetness.”
Spaten Premium Lager has a 5.2% ABV, 0g protein, 10 carbs, 0g fat, 21 IBU and 152 calories. It has a “Good” rating on Beer Advocate.
Our Review of Spaten Premium Lager
This is the third German lager I have tried. The first two, Weihenstephaner Original and Hofbrau Original, were both fantastic. Spaten Premium Lager may be the best of the three, but that is splitting hairs. It is very similar to Weihenstephaner Original, which I described as “smooth, crisp, clean, refreshing and no aftertaste.” I will need to do a taste test with both at the same time to determine which is better. In contrast, Hofbrau Original is more “full bodied,” and its “malty spicy full-bodied” taste may be better with a meal. All three of these are great beer choices.
For other excellent German beer recommendations, try Weihenstephaner Original, Hofbrau Original Lager, Ayinger OktoberFest, Warsteiner German Pilsener, Paulaner Hefeweizen, Franziskaner Weissbier and Weihenstephaner Vitus.
