Our Review of Paulaner Hefeweizen
Recently I have tried several German beers, mainly lagers, pilsners, wheat beers and marzens. They have ranged from very good to spectacular. This is the fourth German wheat beer I have tried, two of which are Hefeweizens, a type of wheat beer. Without getting too much into particulars, Hefeweizens are characterized by Allagash Brewing as having a “strong presence of banana and clove.”
I believe I drank and liked this Hefeweizen many years ago, which is what previously led me to try their non alcoholic Weizen-Radler. This may be my least favorite NA beer, but that is my fault. I didn’t read the description of the beverage and focused on the Paulaner name and Weizen in the title.
Paulaner Hefeweizen is certainly an excellent beer as per its ratings at Beer Advocate. However, I could taste the hint of banana, which I did not find in the other German wheat beers. To me this is a minor negative. While I would gladly drink this beer again, I rank it behind Franzikaner Weissbier and Erdinger Weissbier. Weihenstephaner Vitus may be the best of all, but with its 7.7 ABV not the best choice all the time.
For German beer recommendations try Erdinger Weissbier, Ayinger OktoberFest, Warsteiner German Pilsener, Franziskaner Weissbier, Weihenstephaner Original Premium Lager and Weihenstephaner Vitus.
