Our Review of Hofbrau Hefeweizen

I previously tried Hofbrau Original lager and several German wheat beers, as well as other German beers. Hofbrau Original was excellent, although I did like two lagers from Weihenstephaner better. As for wheat beers, Franzikaner Weissbier was excellent and Weihenstephaner Vitus was outstanding, but its 7.7% ABV is too high to drink regularly. The Paulaner Hefeweizen was the one wheat beer I tried that qualified as a Hefeweizen. While very good, it had that hint of banana found in some Hefeweizen beers that I don’t like.
Hofbrau Hefeweizen was much better than Paulaner. It was smooth, crisp and drinkable. Despite Hofbrau’s description, it had no hint of banana. I would have had a second one if I had more, which is the ultimate test. I don’t know if it was better than Franzikaner Weissbier, but was certainly in the ballpark.
For other excellent German beer recommendations, try Hofbrau Original, Weihenstephaner Original, Ayinger OktoberFest, Warsteiner German Pilsener, Franziskaner Weissbier and Weihenstephaner Vitus.
