The Craft Beer Market
Oakland United Beerworks is an Oakland, California based craft brewery that brews Oakland Glow Pilsner. The craft beer market has grown rapidly over the last 40 years after Congress legalized homebrewing in 1978. As a result, this inspired many beer enthusiasts to start their own small breweries. Today the overall beer market is flat and possibly in slight decline. The craft beer segment has become a greater percentage of the overall total. Many small breweries are closing, but many are also starting up. The number of breweries in the United States continues to rise, albeit at a much slower rate. Many are predicting a “beerpocalypse” as once popular breweries, brewpubs and tasting rooms close.
Oakland United Beerworks
Oakland United Beerworks was founded in 2009 as Linden Street Brewery, the first community-based production brewery in Oakland since Golden West Brewery closed in the 1950s. In 2017, the building on Linden Street was sold and the brewery moved its operations to the waterfront Jack London District and rebranded as Oakland United Beerworks. Their taproom and outdoor beer patio is open Thursdays through Sundays, is dog-friendly and has views of the brewery.

Our Review of Oakland Glow Pilsner
I tried this beer at a restaurant under the same conditions as when I had Deschutes Brewery’s King Crispy Pilsner. The restaurant’s beer selection was otherwise mass market beers. I had heard of Oakland United and previously had one of their beers when I was in Oakland, but I could not remember which one, so I tried it. As a German style pilsner, it was pretty similar to King Crispy Pilsner, a little hoppier than a standard American pilsner. If you believe that all pilsners and lagers are boring and bland beers, then Oakland Glow is a good alternative. I would drink it again, this time not just as a default option.
