The Craft Beer Market
Deschutes Brewery is a popular Oregon craft brewery that brews King Crispy Pilsner. The craft beer market has grown rapidly over the last 40 years after Congress legalized homebrewing in 1978. As a result, this inspired many beer enthusiasts to start their own small breweries. Today the overall beer market is flat and possibly in slight decline. The craft beer segment has become a greater percentage of the overall total. Many small breweries are closing, but many are also starting up. The number of breweries in the United States continues to rise, albeit at a much slower rate. Many are predicting a “beerpocalypse” as once popular breweries, brewpubs and tasting rooms close.
Deschutes Brewery
Gary Fish founded Deschutes in 1988 as a small brewpub in downtown Bend, Oregon and named it after the Deschutes River. Today the brewery sells more than 225,000 barrels per year to 32 states and internationally. Deschutes has a brewery and tasting room less than a mile across town in Bend and a second pub in downtown Portland. The brewery is well known for its large variety of IPAs and Stouts.

Our Review of King Crispy Pilsner
We tried this beer by default at a restaurant whose beer selection was otherwise mass market beers. Knowing that Deschutes was a highly regarded brewery, it was worth the try. We were not disappointed. If you believe that all pilsners and lagers are boring and bland beers, then we recommend trying King Crispy Pilsner. As a German style pilsner it was simultaneously drinkable with more taste and no bitterness. We would drink it again, this time not just as a default option.
