The Craft Beer Market
Topa Topa Brewing Company is a craft brewer located in Southern California. The craft beer market has grown rapidly over the last 40 years after Congress legalized homebrewing in 1978, inspiring many beer enthusiasts to start their own small breweries. Today the overall beer market is flat and possibly in slight decline. The craft beer segment has become a greater percentage of the overall total. Many small breweries are closing, but many are also starting up. The number of breweries in the United States continues to rise, albeit at a much slower rate.
Topa Topa Brewing Company
Topa Topa Brewing Co. was founded in 2015 in Ventura, CA, nestled between the Topa Topa mountains in Ojai and the salty shores of the Pacific. They believe that the people should drink great beer and Topa Topa uses the freshest ingredients. They have taprooms in Ventura, Ojai, Santa Barbara and Camarillo and they offer 6-packs, growlers, and crowlers.
I have been to the taproom in Santa Barbara, which is located right around the corner from the Figueroa Mountain taproom in the Funk Zone.
Topa Topa Brewing Dos Topas Lager
Topa Topa Brewing describes Dos Topas Lager as “The summer sun dips low. You brush the salt from your skin after a long day of ocean swims and sandy beach towel naps. Now, your reward: you sink into your hammock with a Dos Topas in hand and let the cool, crisp taste wash over you. So tomorrow, when those warm sunshiny rays crest the mountain peaks, you’ll be ready for round dos.” Topa Topa lists tasting notes as Cracker, Maize & Crisp. Topa Topa markets Dos Topas Lager as a summer refreshing and drinkable lager beer.
Dos Topas Lager has a low 4.5% ABV and a low 12 IBU. It has a “Very Good” rating on Beer Advocate.
Our Review of Topa Topa Brewing Dos Topas Lager
If you have seen our review of El Sully from 21st Amendment, Dos Topas Lager from Topa Topa Brewing is a similar “Mexican style” lager but much better. Dos Topas describes the beer much like 21st Amendment described El Sully, with an emphasis on summer and the beach. However, we much preferred Dos Topas Lager, which was both very drinkable and more robust in taste. We have had the beer on tap at the Santa Barbara taproom and in cans and liked it very much both ways.
