The Non Alcoholic Beer Market
Constellation Brands imports Corona Non Alcoholic Beer from Mexico into the United States. Constellation Brands also imports Modelo Beer, Pacifico, Wine, Vodka, Bourbon and other alcoholic beverages. The non alcoholic beer market has grown rapidly in recent years with the introduction of non alcoholic beers that taste more like regular beer. Non alcoholic beers have several health advantages over regular beers, including fewer calories, sugar, carbs and of course, alcohol. Non alcoholic means less than 0.5% alcohol, so non alcoholic beers can still have traces of alcohol.
Athletic Brewing is the current market leader in non alcoholic beers and is a top 10 craft brewer, but more and more specialty non alcoholic breweries are entering the market, as well as traditional breweries. Not a day goes by without some news story about the rise of non alcoholic beer and societal trends towards reducing alcohol intake.
Corona Non Alcoholic
Constellation Brands describes Corona Non Alcoholic Beer as “the taste of the original in a non-alcoholic brew. Meet Corona Non-alcoholic. It has the same crisp and balanced taste of your favorite Mexican Lager. Add a lime wedge and enjoy anytime…The Aroma: Notes of fruit, honey, and malt.”
Corona Non Alcoholic Beer has less than 0.5% alcohol, 60 calories, 17.5 carbs, 0g fat and 1.3g protein. There is no information on IBU but it has to be low. It has a “Good” rating on Beer Advocate, which is far better than Corona Extra’s “Awful” rating. This begs the question as to how the non alcoholic version could taste just like the original, but be “Good” and not “Awful.” Perhaps lowered expectations? Perhaps a different category of reviewers? I checked a few other places such as Total Wine and More, ProofNoMore and Target and they all had very high ratings for Corona Non Alcoholic Beer. Only Untapped gave it a lower rating.
Our Review of Corona NA Beer
If you read our post about ProofNoMore, I bought 35 single non alcoholic beers to try. I decided to start at the bottom with O’Doul’s, one of the most well known and most hated non alcoholic beers. It was not great but better than expected. I followed that up with other non alcoholic beers from large brewers. Clausthauler was awful, Budweiser Zero was Ok and tasted like regular Bud, and Becks was good, better than the alcoholic version.
So next I decided to continue with large brewers and try Corona Non Alcoholic. I was very reluctant to purchase this beer. While I do not think regular Corona Extra is as “awful” as its ratings, I don’t consider it a great beer and I assumed the non alcoholic version would be pretty terrible. But I decided to go ahead with my experiment testing all these non alcoholic beers and added Corona Non Alcoholic to my order. Before drinking it, I decided to check out the reviews and I was shocked how good they were.
My Tasting
If you watch the video accompanying this post, from the first taste I was pleasantly surprised. In the video I repeat several times that it tasted just like regular Corona and I could not tell the difference. The more I think about it, however, I can tell the difference. The non alcoholic version was indeed much better than Corona Extra and had a much cleaner and refreshing taste. I even took an extra swig at the end of the video, the first time I have done that. If I had more of the beer, I probably would have opened a second. I will definitely buy Corona Non Alcoholic again. It was a perfect beer to drink and sit outside on a warm summer day.
