Spaten Oktoberfest UR Marzen Beer Review

Spaten Brewery

Spaten Oktoberfest UR Marzen Beer is brewed by Spaten Munchen, a famous German brewery that dates back to 1397. The brewery merged with the Franzikaner Brewery in 1922, as both breweries had the same owner. In 1997 the brewery combined with Lowenbrau to form Spaten-Löwenbräu-Gruppe. The brewery brews a variety of beers including Lager, Oktoberfest and Non Alcoholic.

Spaten Oktoberfest UR Marzen

Spaten Oktoberfest UR Marzen is different from the Spaten Oktoberfestbier served at Oktoberfest in Germany. The best descriptions come from US retailers rather than Spaten’s Germany website. Per Total Wine & More, “Created in 1872, this is the world’s first Oktoberfest beer, brewed for the greatest folk festival in the world. Its impeccable taste balances roasted malt flavor with the perfect amount of hops and an underlying sweetness, true to tradition.”

Spaten Oktoberfest UR Marzen has a 5.9% ABV, 2.7g protein, 13.5 carbs, 0g fat, 23 IBU and 174 calories. It has a “Good” rating on Beer Advocate.

Our Review of Spaten Premium Lager

RATING: 5 BEERS OUT OF 5

I have tried one other beer from Spaten, their Premium Lager. It was fantastic, “smooth, crisp, clean, refreshing and no aftertaste.” I have also tried several German Oktoberfest beers, which ranged from extremely good to incredible. Ayinger OktoberFest-Marzen was the best of them all. Then I read an article from Chowhound that named the top 9 Oktoberfest beers. Ayinger was number four and Spaten just ahead of it at number 3. So I decided to try Spaten.

I disagree with Chowhound, but we are splitting hairs. This is a great beer, but I rate it just a tad below Ayinger. It was more “malty” and “caramel-ly” than Ayinger and I preferred the Ayinger, which was smoother. If you prefer a more malty taste, then Spaten may be the better choice. But you can’t go wrong with either beer.

For other excellent German Oktoberfest beer recommendations, try Ayinger OktoberFest, Paulaner Oktoberfest Marzen and Hofbrau Oktoberfestbier.
