Rooster T Feathers Comedy Club History
Rooster T Feathers opened in 1984 in Sunnyvale, California in the heart of Silicon Valley. One of the more interesting non-comedy stories is that the site previously was Andy Capp’s Tavern, one of the test sites for Atari’s first video game, Pong, in 1972. The story goes that that the tavern’s owner called Atari a few days later to let them know the machine was broken. In reality, the game was not broken; it was just jammed with quarters due to its instant popularity. Andy Capp’s later became The Country Store and then Rooster T Feathers. We have been to Rooster T Feathers several times.
Rooster T Feathers Venue
Rooster T Feathers is a great place to see a comedy show. It is located right on El Camino Real, a main thoroughfare from San Jose to San Francisco and is close to several freeways. There is plenty of free parking available nearby. The venue holds about 150 guests, which is ideal for an intimate setting and finding seats close to the stage. Show prices are very reasonable, although there is a two drink minimum.
The Shows
The club is typically open five nights per week, with Mondays and Tuesdays being dark. Shows on Thursday through Saturday (and sometimes Sunday) usually have a host, an opener and a headliner. Wednesdays during most of the year include a Comedy Showcase for amateurs to test that their comedic skills along with the host and headliner. The Comedy Showcase is not open mic, as wannabe comedians must reserve their spots in advance. Every spring the club hosts its “New Talent Comedy Competition” on Wednesdays. The competition starts with 144 entrants, with the audience voting for the winner each week to advance to the next round until a winner is chosen. The club also has comedy classes for new and up and coming comedians and “Roast Battle” competition nights.
Rooster T Feathers Comedy Club – The Bottom Line
We like Rooster T Feathers a lot. We like how close you can sit to the stage, the prices, and the variety of shows. The Comedy Showcase can be a lot of fun seeing amateurs try out their jokes and bits. The club is a great alternative to the larger venues in San Francisco and San Jose.
