Founders Brewing Porter Beer Review
The Craft Beer Market
Founders Brewing Porter is brewed by Founders Brewing, a craft brewer based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The craft beer market has grown rapidly over the last 40 years after Congress legalized homebrewing in 1978. As a result, this inspired many beer enthusiasts to start their own small breweries. However, today the overall beer market is declining. and the number of breweries in the United States is trending down.
Founders Brewing
Founders Brewing began brewing in 1997. Their Grand Rapids taproom is open seven days per week. RateBeer.com and BeerAdvocate.com consistently rate Founders as a top brewer. They brew a wide variety of beers and more, including their popular All Day IPA.
Founders Brewing Porter
Founders Brewing describes Porter as “Robust and Silky Smooth – Pouring silky black with a creamy tan head, Porter gives off mild aromas of roasted coffee and dark chocolate complemented by low bitterness and a medium body. The nose is sweet with strong chocolate and caramel malt presence creating a graham cracker sweetness that needs to be tasted to be believed.” Porter has a 6.5% ABV, 45 IBU, 230 calories, 24.5g carbs, 1g sugar and 2g protein. It has an “Outstanding” rating on Beer Advocate.
Our Review of Founders Brewing Porter Beer

I am not big into stouts and porters or bitter beers. I previously had Deschutes Black Butte Porter, which was excellent, but its IBI is only 30. Next I tried North Coast Old No. 38 Stout, which was not bitter despite its 53 IBU.
I have never had any beers from Founders, but I know they are highly regarded in the industry. I enjoyed this Porter but it was not as good as Deschutes Black Butte Porter. The chocolate notes were very noticeable although I don’t know about Graham Crackers. I would drink it again, but it seems more like a liquid dessert than a beer I would drink with a meal or by itself.
