Corona Extra
Constellation Brands describes Corona Extra as having “Well-balanced taste and light hop character with a crisp, clean finish. It is characterized by an orange blossom honey aroma with a hint of herb. It contains Water, Barley Malt, Non-malted Cereals and Hops. Brewed as a model of what good beer should be, this rich, full-flavored Pilsner-style Lager delivers a crisp, refreshing taste.” The company’s omnipresent advertising positions the beer as the one to drink at the beach or to feel like you are at the beach, or just generally chilling out.
Corona Extra has a 4.6% ABV, 1.2g protein, 13.9 carbs, 18 IBU and 146 calories. It has an “Awful” rating on Beer Advocate.
Our Review of Corona Extra
I understand that Corona Extra has an “awful” rating on Beer Advocate and normally I would never drink it. But the story here is similar to other times when I was boxed into a corner in choosing a beer. One night I was at an event that had three beer choices, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Heineken and Corona Extra. I would have gone with the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but it was warm and the others were cold. If it were 50 years ago, I would have chosen the Heineken. Back then it was one of few choices for “premium beer” and anyone bringing Heineken to a party got a round of kudos and was assumed to have a few extra bucks to spend. But this isn’t the 1970s and there in nothing special about Heineken. So I opted for the Corona without the lime.
Much like my reaction to Modelo Especial, it wasn’t “awful.” It’s light and refreshing and better than most inexpensive mass market beers. It really is a good choice for a hot day or if you want a beer that is not filling. We give you the Beer Advocate ratings here so you get more than one opinion on the beers we review, but in this case we disagree. While we don’t know the demographics of users at Beer Advocate, we assume that they are generally “beer snobs” who would never say anything good about a beer like Corona. So take it for what it’s worth.
