Opillia Dunkel
Opillia describes Dunkel as “… a classic dark ruby lager. Endowed with a special, expressive caramel flavour with moderate hop bitterness. Expressive caramel, malty aroma. That is why every so often one can find this variety described as “the velvet one”. Try #real, dark, classic.”
Opillia Dunkel has a 4.8% ABV, 13 IBU and 215 calories (16.9 oz. bottle). There is little other reliable information. It has a “Good” rating on Beer Advocate based on only 1 review. It has a 3.18 rating out of 5 on Untappd.
Our Review of Opillia Dunkel

The first Dunkel I tried was Hofbrau Dunkel, which was tremendous. I had it in a bottle and then visited Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas where I had it on tap. I then started seeking out other Dunkel beers to try at restaurants and taprooms, including Figueroa Mountain “I Dunkeled in My Pants,” Enegren Brewing Dunkel and Hacker-Pschorr Dunkel. All were excellent and ranged from 5-5.4% ABV and (where available) IBU from 16-20.
So I bought a 0.5 liter bottle of Opillia Dunkel at Total Wine and More assuming it was another German Dunkel. Little did I realize that the Total Wine German beer section was really a European beer section and Opillia is from the Ukraine.
I found the relatively low 4.7% ABV and 13 IBU surprising and concerning. My concerns were well founded. Opillia Dunkel was nowhere near as good as the other Dunkels I had tried. It tasted weak and watered down. I would drink it again if it were offered to me, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it again. There are much better choices in the category.
For better Dunkel and darker beer recommendations, try Hofbrau Dunkel, Ayinger OktoberFest, Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale and Figueroa Mountain Davy Brown Ale.
